"I just have to tell you about a trek that i have just been on it was fabulous. It was in Spain 30 mins from Malaga. Ride With Me Lobo Park Tour. Kalle Stjernstrom (a brilliant horse-man) took us out over 6 days through beautiful and breathtaking Spanish countryside. I am so still high from the whole experience of it all. The horses were beautiful Spanish horses, the most beautiful that i have ever seen with such good temperament, working so hard to please you & doing everything that you ask of them. We started by getting to know our horses with Kalles guidance. I just loved watching him work with his horses it was something to be seen, it was as if he knew what they were thinking. I guess he is like a horse whisperer. We set out on the first day to Casarabonela which is in the mountains. On the way we galloped through the rivers, the Rio Grande & Rio Seco. Day two, up over the mountain on an old Roman road...that was 2000 years old! Wow just thinking about it is making my hair stand on end. We stopped for a very lovely picnic where we let the horses run free, for a well earned rest and we ate Spanish tapas. That night we stayed in the Hotel Meson La Posada del Condo.

The next day, the best, we rode around the lakes. The colours were magnificent ! After lunch we made our way to the Lobo Park in Antequera. We could hear the wolves howling as we came closer to Lobo Park. After the horses were put to bed, as they always come first, we ate a lovely BBQ and then went with Daniel to meet his wolves, now that was good. That night I slept in a Tepee, yes a Tepee! You could hear everything, the wolves howling, the horses calling to each other. Not much sleep as we talked and laughed until the early hours. So much fun !!!

In the morning we left and I must say I was a bit sad to leave such a lovely place. But still fun was to be had on our way to Almogia, a place of military history, very interesting. We were able to spend some time in the village of La Bonita, a very old Spanish village, and had great food and drink. The next day was a bit more of a change as it was lovely countryside but very up and down but it was all worth it, as we ate Paella for lunch mmmmmm! Last day, I was sad that it was, I think was the best for the horses with a gentle day riding up stream back home to Coin at evening we sat and ate, had beer, talk and laughed about what a great time it had all been. Oh to be there again!

Riding the Dream
"Hacking around on tarmac roads on grey November days, huddled under a long riding coat with freezing feet, I used to dream about wide blue skies, open countryside and sunshine. I had also long had a secret fantasy about riding a dancing white horse with a flowing mane and tail. When we took early retirement and moved to Spain two years ago I discovered that both were possible – even at my advanced age! Away from the concrete cancer encroaching the coast, up in the pine woods and mountains around Alhaurin el Grande (not far from the water tower that looks like a castle) riding takes on a different meaning. Kalle, our guide, is a genius at finding new and interesting tracks, even after two years of riding in the area. His Andalucian horses are forward going, gentle and sure-footed; they can cover rocky terrain with ease. Their paces are comfortable and smooth, and so it's relatively easy to sit to the trot and canter. You can follow stoney trails up through the dappled sunshine in the pine forests to viewpoints where you can see down to Malaga bay in one direction and across to the scattered white villages further north in the other. Then there are the sandy gallops on the valley floor of Baranco Blanco, winding round clumps of bushes covered in pink and yellow blossoms, to end up paddling in the river. Kestrels can be seen hovering in the sky and, on rarer memorable occasions, eagles. Further afield on the Rio Grande you can ride along the edge of, or even through the water, accompanied only by white egrets and heron; or take the trail down to Entrerios to a venta where you can tie up your horse while you enjoy the barbecue or paella. And sometimes there are special rides; such as the two-day trip up to the village of Casarabonela up in the mountains, or joining a local romeria or feria to share the colour and excitement of Spanish life and culture first hand.

Here at "Ride With Me" I have discovered a more relaxed style of riding on western tack. Because western saddles are more secure (you have more to grab hold of!) it does not seem such a cardinal sin to wear a wide-brimmed hat rather than a riding helmet, or even let the wind blow through your hair (you are, of course, offered a hard hat if you prefer). And after you come in from your ride, after untacking and washing down the horses, there is the bar a few steps across the yard where you can collapse in a chair with a beer or a tinto verano and plan your next excursion. Or you can stay even longer and talk horses over lunch or dinner. It's all quite different from riding in the UK!

Just wanted to say thanks again for a fantastic time, sorry if I bent your ear all day Richie but i think you've finally met your match when it comes to talking. The best ride I've been on for a long long time and I've been riding a long long time !
